How to Contact Your Lawmakers

In Congress:

  • Phone: You can reach your Senators and Representative (and their legislative staff) by calling the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121. You can also call their direct lines, available through Congress.org or through www.thomas.gov/
  • Email: Much less effective than a phone call, email must come through the link on the lawmaker’s website to be counted (rarely read). You can get to the website via www.thomas.gov or Congress.org.
  • Postal mail: Find the postal address on the member’s website or write to:

The Honorable (first and last name)
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510

OR

The Honorable (first and last name)
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515

Remember, when you call or email, be sure to identify yourself as a constituent, giving your address and zipcode. In a letter, be sure to include your return address.

In your state:

  • Go to www.congress.org and click on “state,” then enter your address and zipcode for email or postal links to all your state elected officials. Again, be sure to identify yourself as a constituent.
