(June 14, 2005)—The House Subcommittee responsible for allocating funds to federal housing programs will make their decisions tomorrow, Wednesday, June 15. At risk are thousands of rental vouchers, operating funds for Housing Authorities and financial support for nonprofit housing providers throughout the country. The ability of individual tenants with disabilities to pay their rent to private and nonprofit landlords will be decided by the House Appropriations Subcommittee tomorrow. If the Subcommittee does not fully fund HUD’s 2004-2005 budget for 2006, HUD will have to cut somewhere. Federal funding for very low income tenants will be one of the targets. But if Congress does not budget sufficient funding for HUD’s programs as they currently exist, individuals with mental illnesses and other disabilities, already burdened by extremely low incomes, will face new housing crises.
