Frequently Asked Questions About XML and RSS

What is RSS?

RSS (Real Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary) is a format the Bazelon Center uses to deliver summaries of frequently updated material such as action alerts, news releases and new publications. Instead of visiting www.bazelon.org to browse for new articles and features, RSS automatically tells you when something new is posted online. Once you've installed an RSS reader, you can subscribe to the Bazelon Center's RSS feeds to receive notification of new content posted on the The Bazelon Center's website.

If you or your organization have a website, you can also use our RSS feed to post links to new items from the Bazelon Center's RSS feed on your website. This list is automatically updated, so your users—with no ongoing effort on your part—can access new content from the Bazelon Center as it becomes available on our RSS feed.

Why Would I Want to Use RSS?

RSS saves time.
You don't have to visit our website to know whether we've posted something new. You'll find out the minute it happens.

RSS puts the power in your hands.
You only receive the information you are interested in. We do not collect any information—including e-mail addresses—from subscriptions to our RSS feeds.

RSS offers fresh content for your website... and you don't have to do a thing!
With a simple, one-time setup, our RSS feeds can automatically post links to the Bazelon Center's latest news, action alerts, or publications on your website.

What is XML?

RSS feeds are posted in a format called XML. Special programs interpret information on our RSS feeds to display them on your computer in various ways. We also use XML and code provided by RSS Digest to allow other organizations and individuals to include links to new content from the Bazelon Center without having to manually check our page or update content.

How Do I Get Started?

To begin receiving notifications of new information from the Bazelon Center—including news releases, action alerts and updates, and new publications—just follow this easy, four-step process:

Step 1: Download an RSS reader program.
Since most people don't speak XML, you will need a program that is capable of translating the code for our RSS feeds into an understandable message. Download your RSS reader now...*

* The Bazelon Center makes no recommendation on which RSS reader to use, but you may find this C|Net article helpful in making your selection.

Step 2: Select the content you wish to recieve.
Choose the Bazelon Center feed that you wish to subscribe to from the list provided in the "What Information Does the Bazelon Center Syndicate?" section below. Click on the feed's title or XML image that looks like this: Sample XML image.

Step 3: Copy the RSS feed's address.
Copy the feed's address from the address bar in your web browser. You will need website addresses for each feed you wish to subscribe to. For your convenience, we have included the subscription addresses for each feed. You can obtain the address for a particular feed elsewhere on the Bazelon Center's site by clicking the Sample XML image image.

Step 4: Subscribe to the RSS feed.
Open your new RSS reader program and find the program's "Subscribe" or "Add Feed" function. Now paste the web address of each RSS feed you wish to subscribe to in the space provided.

The subscription process will differ depending on the RSS reader program you use. You may wish to consult the program's "Help" section to find out how to add RSS feeds in your RSS reader.

You will immediately receive information from our RSS feeds and will automatically receive notifications on new content at www.bazelon.org. If you or your organization have a website and would like to syndicate content from the Bazelon Center, please see the "How Do I Post the Bazelon Center's RSS Feeds on My Website" section below.
