Bazelon Leadership 21

Angela Downs

Angie is an advocate with Disability Rights North Carolina and is a member of the Abuse, Neglect and Institutions team. DRNC, based in Raleigh, is the designated Protection and Advocacy system for the state of North Carolina. Angie graduated from Minnesota State University, Mankato with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Dependency Studies. During her final year she completed a volunteer internship at The House of Hope, where she provided counseling to adult males with chemical dependency and mental health issues. She also spent three years working in residential facilities that serve individuals with mental health disabilities. Shortly before relocating to NC she worked as a guardian ad litem for the State of Minnesota.

Angie grew up with a close family member who struggled with mental illness. It was a lifelong battle that not only involved working towards recovery but also fighting against negative stereotypes and social stigma. Her experiences encouraged a strong desire to work to improve the lives of others. This remains her goal going into the future and as a member of Leadership 21.
