Supplemental Security Income

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) provides important financial support to people with mental disabilities. The Bazelon Center works to ensure that, when necessary, people with disabilities can access the resources necessary to lead more stable, independent lives in the community.

  • New: Notice of a class action settlement against the Social Security Adminstration (SSA), challenging its policy of denying SSI and other benefits to "fleeing felons" - those with outstanding arrest warrants for a felony. (8/27/09)
  • A Special Needs Trust can enable someone with a disability to benefit from set-aside resources without losing Medicaid and SSI benefits. (4/09)
  • Attention people with visual impairments: A federal court has authorized a class action lawsuit against the Social Security Administration (SSA) on behalf of people with visual impairments who require communications from SSA to be in an accessible format in order to participate in the Social Security or SSI programs. Read the Notice of Class Action in the case, American Council of the Blind v. Astrue.
