Julia Garrison was the Bazelon Fellow from 2018 – 2020. She received her JD from Georgetown Law Center and BA from Johns Hopkins University with a double major in Sociology and Anthropology and a double minor in Psychology and Spanish for the Professions.

Georgetown Law Center’s commitment to public interest law and experiential learning provided Julia with valuable skills that allowed her to succeed as a Bazelon Fellow.

Julia’s interest in the Bazelon Fellowship stemmed from her passion for systematic civil rights litigation. She was initially moved by the mission of the organization to engage in progressive advocacy while fighting for the rights of people with mental health disabilities. Having received civil rights litigation experience from an undergraduate internship at the ACLU of Maryland, Julia felt uniquely prepared for the Mickey and David Bazelon fellowship.

During her time as a fellow, Julia practiced strategic lawyering skills in both litigation and public policy. Julia believes that Bazelon is a great place to start a legal career because of the guidance from dedicated attorneys, opportunities to try different types of advocacy, and develop essential litigation skills.

Julia currently works as a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in the Office of Fair Housing.
