Strategic Communications Internship

For four decades, the Judge David L. Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law has been the nation's leading legal-advocacy organization for people with mental disabilities. Through a combination of public policy research and reform, public education, impact litigation, technical assistance and coalition work, our advocacy has opened up public schools, workplaces, housing and other opportunities for people with mental disabilities to participate in community life. Our work has also outlawed institutional abuse and won protections against arbitrary confinement.

Description:
The Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law seeks a self-motivated and detail-oriented undergraduate or graduate student who is passionate about mental health and disability issues, and influencing audiences regarding these issues through strategic communications.

Duties:

  • Researching media opportunities
  • Developing and honing media lists 
  • Drafting and/or editing materials, such as press releases, action alerts, op-eds, message framing, talking points, web copy, correspondence, etc.
  • Assisting with website maintenance using a Content Management System
  • Assisting director of communications in other ongoing projects
  • Attending and covering occasional legislative briefings, press events and/or coalition meetings
  • Working closely with legal, policy and development staff members

Qualifications:

  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic undergraduate or graduate student
  • Understanding and appreciation of current events, media, and policy
  • Strong writing ability
  • Creative thinker
  • Outspoken and proactive when contributing to collaborative efforts
  • Experience with a content management system and uploading to a website is a plus
  • Eagerness to learn and to assist where needed

Salary:
This is an unpaid, volunteer position.

Length of Internship:
16-40 hours a week. 8-16 weeks. Schedule is flexible.
