Bazelon Center Seeks Experienced Attorney

The Judge David L. Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law seeks an experienced attorney to take leadership in ground-breaking litigation designed to advance the rights of people with mental disabilities and to reform public service systems. The Center, a national legal advocacy organization founded in 1972, is a leader in promoting community integration and self-determination for people with mental disabilities. The Center’s staff includes seven lawyers, five policy advocates, and other professionals.
As part of the Center’s legal team, the attorney will develop and litigate innovative cases. Current litigation priorities include: implementing the Americans with Disabilities Act’s integration mandate, preventing the incarceration of individuals with mental illnesses, enforcing entitlements under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and reforming children’s service systems. The attorney will have opportunities to work on Supreme Court and other appellate cases, lobby federal agencies, and work with state-based advocates.
Applicants should have a strong commitment to the protection of individual rights as well as excellent analytic and writing skills. A background in public interest law is preferred.
