“A lack of discipline” is often cited as one of the top challenges facing schools. Effective practices for resolving behavior problems and creating a positive school climate are critical to securing a quality education for all students.
Schoolwide positive behavior support (PBS) is effective in both creating a good climate for learning and for resolving behavior issues. It is a systematic approach that relies on clear expectations, positive rewards for good behavior, and appropriate interventions when behavior issues emerge. It is gaining recognition not only for its results in improving student behavior and school climate but also in increasing academic achievement and student progress. All students benefit from a safe and encouraging school climate. When behavior improves, teachers have more time to focus on learning.
Schools are recognizing the need for taking a systematic approach to teaching reading or math. An equally systematic approach is needed for improving student behavior. Just as some students will need extra support and help in learning to read, others will need more intensive interventions to resolve behavior problems that interfere with their and others’ success in school. PBS uses an array of individualized supports and interventions based on students’ needs.
PBS is effective in meeting the needs of students with emotional disorders. Without PBS and other effective interventions, students with emotional disorders often do poorly in school. A perilously high number of students with serious disorders -- some 58% -- leave school without graduating.
Schools that fully implement PBS, including those that provide intensive mental health services and supports when needed, are leading the way in ensuring a quality education for all.
