Children should be raised in families. All children--even those with the most severe mental disabilities-- can be raised in families if they receive adequate support and services.
To help children and preserve families, schools must work together with the mental health, foster care, and juvenile justice systems. At the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law, we advocate for coordinated systems of care that support families and enable children to become successful adults.
We also work for schools that are inclusive and empower all children to meet high academic standards. Such schools use positive supports to improve behavior, rather than relying on punishment, suspensions and arrests.
